Soldiers kill 12 Ombatse militan Soldiers deployed to contain the security crisis in Nasarawa State on Tuesday said they have killed 12 suspected members of the outlawed Ombatse militia group at Akwanga Local Government Area of the state. The militants were said to have been killed at a military checkpoint in Akwanga when they engaged soldiers who were on patrol in the area in a gun battle. Three members of the group including a mobile police officer, were also arrested and brought to the Government House at Lafia by the soldiers in a white Hilux pick- up van. The mobile police officer serving with MOPOL 45 Abuja was arrested at Akwanga shortly after closing from his official duty in Abuja. The policeman whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, was said to have come into Akwanga with an official AK 47 rifle which he allegedly gave to the militia group for their operation. Journalists were shown some pictures found on them with one of the militia members posing with an Ak 47 rifle. The state Governor, Tanko Al-Makura, who expressed shock at the development, said he would address the media after a thorough briefing by his security team. Al-Makura, who came to the Government House in a helicopter, stated that he had to cut short his medical treatment leave as a result of the escalating security crisis in the state, adding that he would deal decisively with the situation and restore normalcy. The state Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu, became furious while interrogating the policeman and wondered why the soldiers spared him despite the atrocities he had committed.
