IYC Condemns Official’s Killing, Demands Investigation

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, has condemned the killing of one of its officials, Mr. Sylvanus Otueneh.

Until Otueneh's gruesome killing in the hands of yet-to-be-identified gunmen in the late hours of last Friday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he was an aide of the group's National Secretary-General, Mr. Bristol Alagbariya.

The gunmen, suspected to be assassins, were said to have killed Otueneh after realising that their target (Alagbariya) could not be found.

In a statement by IYC's Publicity Secretary, Mr. Eric Omare, on Monday, the group described the act as barbaric and most condemnable.

The IYC commiserated with the families of the late Otueneh and that of Alagbariya for the irreparable loss.

The group called on the Inspector General of Police and heads of other security agencies to properly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice for the gruesome act.

It also urged members, especially those in the Eastern Zone, to remain calm while the security agencies carry out a detailed investigation to unravel those behind this dastardly act.

However, it clarified, for the benefit of the public, that contrary to the wrong impression that the gunmen invaded the IYC national secretariat, the unfortunate incident happened in the private residence of the IYC National Secretary where a private meeting was taking place.

"The IYC Secretariat is at Izon House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and the meeting that was said to be ongoing at the time of the attack was not an IYC meeting," the IYC clarified.
