FIFA U20 World Cup: Serbia Stun Brazil To Become Champions

A late strike in the second half of extra time helped Serbia beat Brazil 2-1 as they win their first ever FIFA U-20 World Cup title in dramatic style.

It was Nemanja Maksimovic who grabbed the dramatic extra time winner to seal victory for Serbia as Brazil were denied the chance of a sixth triumph in the Youth World Cup.

Stanisa Mandic had secured the opener for Serbia before substitute Andreas Pereira sent the game to extra time with a leveller for Brazil, who dominated possession but were undone by swift Serbian counter-attacks.

After a largely cagey affair, Serbia found themselves in front in the 70 minute when Maksimovic burst into the Brazilian penalty area down that right-hand side and chipped a delicate cross to the back post. Stanisa Mandic drifted in from the left-hand side, taking advantage of some slack defending by Joao Carlos to sweep home from inside the six yard box.

The lead didn't last long. Less than three minutes later, Andreas Pereira produced a moment of individual magic to level the scores.

Serbia were to have the last laugh as Maksimovic got his name into the history books. His late, late strike came after a lung-busting run with just three minutes remaining.

In the loser's final, Mali beat fellow Africans Senegal 3-1 to win the Bronze.
